Argyll & The Isles of Gigha, Islay & Jura

Drive the Kintyre peninsula, take ferries to the garden island of Gigha, then cross to whisky island Islay and wild Jura – one of Scotland’s finest island-hopping overland adventures.

Distance & Duration

Approx. 250–320 miles including ferry crossings. Allow 5 days / 4 nights.

Key Highlights

  • Kintyre peninsula and the Mull of Kintyre
  • Isle of Gigha – the most southerly inhabited Hebridean island
  • Islay – home to eight whisky distilleries including Laphroaig and Ardbeg
  • Isle of Jura – 200 deer, 200 people and the Paps of Jura mountains
  • Oronsay and the Corryvreckan whirlpool

Suggested Stops

  • Inveraray
  • Tarbert
  • Kennacraig (Islay ferry)
  • Port Ellen & Port Askaig, Islay
  • Jura (short passenger ferry)
  • Gigha (Tayinloan ferry)

Where to Stay / Camp

Islay has a small number of formal campsites near Port Charlotte and Bowmore. Wild camping on Jura is exceptional and very remote – come fully self-sufficient. Gigha has a small campsite near the hotel.

Driving Tips

  • Book all CalMac ferries in advance – Islay routes are busy year-round
  • Distillery tours on Islay must be pre-booked; some are closed on Sundays
  • Jura has almost no facilities beyond the Craighouse hotel and shop – carry food and fuel
  • The Corryvreckan whirlpool can be viewed from the northern tip of Jura – tides dictate timing

Best Time to Visit

May to September. Islay’s distilleries host festivals in May and October – check schedules. Summer brings long evenings and clearer Atlantic views.
